Residence Notes:
The SPENCERs who, at that time, had no children lived for a time c. 1872 with the STAVELEYs, before moving to their newly built house at Whangakoko Bay. During this period Henry SPENCER also lived with John GUARD (an early settler) at Kakapo Bay.
The STAVELEYS house was burnt down after the family had left it, as was also William DAY's nearby house.

GENERAL NOTE:
Charles George STAVELEY wrote that his uncle had come out in the early days with a little money, and bought the lease of "The Tongue" on which he intended to graze sheep. As there was no house on the land he boarded with in two local houses. In order to raise money to buy stock, he became the first teacher at a little school in Whangauaura or Baldicks but was sacked by the School Committee after a year, Robert George STAVELEY briefly took over as teacher, while SPENCER was clearing scrub.Robert STAVELEY later grazed 300 sheep on the Tongue and another 300 sheep were sent out from England to stock the farm at Starborough Station which is now Seddon.Itis not known if the SPENCERs had children of their own but Charles George STAVELEYwrote that a Frank SPENCER died in the flu epidemic of 1918.
