Edmund and mary had had only one child (Edmund B) in 1910, so we assume Virginia was adopted. One possibility is that she was the illegitimate daughter of Edmund D' s sister Ellen who was living with them in 1910. As a teacher she would have been anxious to conceal the birth.

BEF 1925-1933: 9,Bourne Street,Clayfield, Sandgate, Lilley,Brisbane,QLD AUS <

Residence Notes:
A flood in 1883 carried away all houses in the locality except for that occupied by Walter Nash's family, but it did remove their foundations, so the property had to be taken over by the trustees. The later move to Toowong was due to Emily's health
The family lived for 23 years at Oxley. Geoffrey MORCOM believes that the roads adjoining their land (which is now in the suburb of Corinda) were named after the family Morcom Avenue, Cliveden Avenue and Rathlyn Avenue.
Walter Nash, having sold the Auchenflower house, rented a house at Alderley. "While there I bought a house at Wilston, but Alison [surveyor?] condemned it, so I lived there alone until I could dispose of it, and the family rented a house at Albion"

OCCUPATIONS:
Apprentice for William MORCOM's businessOccupation Note: Walter Nash wrote "On leaving school I was sent to my father's business as an apprentice, going through three departments in this (then) large concern, turning over £300,000 per year. The firm made a big loss later on, losing about £60,000 in a Dutch business.".
Traveller for William MORCOM's business in Bristol.Occupation Note: Walter Nash admits he was too inexperienced to make a success of this job.
ABT 1874 Overseer in Antigua.Occupation Note: This was on the plantation of one of his three uncles BROWN. Walter Nash was in charge of a gang of "Kanakas". He found this job uncongenial. He was lent a horse (returned via the mailman) to move on to Bundaberg..
Cattleman for Farm of his Uncle A H BROWN M.L.C. and A.H's brother in Gin Gin nr. Bundaberg.Occupation Note: He was met at Bundaberg by his brother Alfred who "after dinner at the Bank (the Commercial of Sydney), took me to Colanne Station my Uncle's....... In a day or two we proceeded to Gin Gin (headquarters), where my Uncles (Brown) had a fine homestead". During his time as cattleman he got lost in the outback and was rescued by Nugent BROWN and the stockman. Joe TAYLOR.
Store manager in Somerset.Occupation Note: One of his Uncle BROWNS sent Walter Nash to set up a store at Somerset (right on the northern tip of Cape York peninsula). Walter Nash had to pay for his own third class passage by coastal boat to Cape York. As the house at Somerset only had a table, a few chairs and a stretcher, he carried a pillow with him. There were only three or four houses at Somerset, including the P.M.'s [Post Master's??] and missionary's (a Mr MacFarlane with whom Walter Nash found company). They felt under threat from aborigines who "had run away from their official duty" and were considered dangerous. Walter Nash wrote "It is wonderful how I regarded things in those days. if I did not like my work, including selling liquor retail (which I was expected to do), I simply left it. It did not seem to worry me.".
Store Clerk for J.E.BROWN's Store in Maryborough.Occupation Note: Walter Nash took this job at the suggestion of one of his uncles, Alfred BROWN. He passed customs entries, issued steamer tickets etc.
Stockman in Barolin nr Bundaberg.Occupation Note: He worked for William BRAND "who brought two entire horses from England - namely Fenman and Trotter"........."I slept in an outhouse connected with the stables, which I lined with canvas, and made very comfortable." Walter Nash was paid 5s a week, later increased to 7s.6p. "William and I used to take fat cattle to the butcher. They had a trained cow which used to lead fat cattle into the slaughter yard, after which she came out again of her own accord". William BRAND later sold Barolin and went into a very successful partnership with a Mr GANT..
May 1878-ABT 1883: Under-Stockman in Rodd's Bay nr Gladstone.Occupation Note: The account by Walter Nash is not very clear but it seems that he was employed by his brother Alfred who was in partnership with Albert NORTON, Chairman of the Union Trustee Co. of Australia Ltd for about 6 years. It seems that Walter Nash had a sideline grazing female cattle at Baffle Creek on the Miriam Vale run. He writes "I spent all that had been left me by my mother on these breeders, but they had not been there many months before a fire started in the neighbourhood, and my fence across the pocket was destroyed, and my cattle got away. I sold them for what was offered me, having had no experience in those days. Why I did not consult my brother, I don's know, and I don't remember him making any suggestions to me, however, as he was leaving the Station at that time, a dissolution having been arranged, I went also". Walter nash was obviously rather "green" as a stockman and found sleeping out with only a blanket to watch the cattle somewhat uncongenial..
1883-1895: Partner in printing firm for Muir & MORCOM in Brisbane.Occupation Note: Walter Nash later joined in partnership with a Alexander MUIR to found Muir & Morcom's Printing and Lithographing Works, Queen Street . He had some financial help from his brother Alfred, and also a promise of a printing order for £80 from an Arthur FORBES who worked at the Queensland National Bank. Walter Nash and MUIR seem to have done well at the printing business and also from buying and selling properties - though his account of these transactions is not entirely clear. They moved to Queen Street where, in 1893, they lost money when their premises were flooded to a depth of 10 ft. They subsequently bought this property but in the financial crisis of 1895 Walter Nash realised that the business could not support both of them, and MUIR had the advantage of being a friend of their bank manager to whom they owed money. Walter Nash left the printing firm at very little personal cost. However he lost another £50 when MUIR took an injunction against him stopping him from canvassing clients of the old firm.
12Oct1896-16Mar1912: Partner in printing firm in Brisbane.Occupation Note: Walter Nash went into partnership with T.BIGGS, buying out his father's share in the business. He writes that in July 1900 he "visited the old land" - it is not clear if this means England or, possibly, the Bundaberg area. BIGGS was unwilling to join Walter Nash in two property purchases which he proposed and, largely as a result of this, they decided to dissolve the partnership on 16th March 1912. Walter Nash paid BIGGS a sum of money to retire..
1913-1928: Owner & Managing Director for Morcoms Ltd in Ryan House, Eagle Street, Brisbane.
ABT 1928 Owner of printing firm in George Street, Brisbane.Occupation Note: Morcom House, a three storey building opposite Centennial Park, was only completed just before the retirement of Walter Nash. Although his printing business had prospered until then, he was unfortunate in taking over the larger premises just as the Great Depression hit Australia. The firm went into substantial debt in order to keep things going, and this was only cleared in the early 1950 after the death of Llewellyn MORCOM who had taken over the management on the death of his father. The building was later taken over by the Government Printer.

GENERAL NOTE:
Author of the "Morcom Family History" (Source 568). Geoffrey MORCOM was seven when his grandfather Walter Nash died. He remembers him as a relatively small man. He attended the City Tabernacle Baptist Church in Brisbane most Sunday mornings. For some reason he preferred this Church to Clayfield Church which was attended by his wife.A newspaper obituary in the Courier Mail Saturday 21 October 1933 described him as a philanthropist
