GENERAL NOTES:
Nicholas and his brother Thomas were on the ship "The Golden Gate" which caught fire off the Mexican coast. It seems that Nicholas was returning from inspecting mines in Mexico and Thomas had been sent to California by his firm - presumably he joined Nicholas on the trip to Mexico. Nicholas was steerage passenger.Nicholas escaped on a raft and saved a woman and boy, but Thomas was drowned before his brother's's eyes. The woman saved kept up a correspondence with her rescuer until his/her death. (Note by David MORCOM - Source 117)Following documents received from David MORCOM in 1998 (based on information from the National Maritime Museum Library, Building E, 3rd Floor, Fort Mason Center, San Francisco CA 94123). The Library found the following sources:1. "Early American Steamers" by E HEYL, NV 19532. "An Ill-Starred Voyage" a description of the sinking of the The S.S. Golden Gate in Jan 1854 (sic) written by Helen Rocca GOSS. It is long article (pages 349-361) in the Californian Historical Society Quarterly and was written written sometime after 1949.3. "The Burning of the Golden Gate in Jul 1862." The impression of a Survivor", by Andre CHAVANNE, translated from the French with an Introduction by Desire FRIED (16 pages - fascinating).4. Photocopies from the Daily Alta California 8.8.1862 & 18.8.1862Cont.
The Golden Gate was more or less continually beset by mishaps and troubles. In 1858, just after she had left for Panama her shaft broke and she had to turn back and be laid up for extended repairs. On July 27th 1862, the Golden Gate was south-bound and about fifteen miles NW of Manzanillo, Mexico. About 5 pm, fire was reported in the forward part of the engine-room and she was immediately headed for the shore 3 and a half miles away in order to beach her. Fanned by an off-shore wind, the fire spread with unbelievable rapidity towards the stern, where most of the passengers had taken refuge. By the time the Golden Gate was beached on a shallow part of the shore many of her passengers had already become victims to the flames. In spite of a heavy surf and high rollers and breakers the boats were launched in a desperate effort to take off as many people as possible; numbers were crushed to death between the side of the steamer and the boats, while others drowned as they jumped into the rough seas.By 9 pm the same day that part of the hull which had not been consumed by the fire had been broken apart by the surf coming in from the Pacific Ocean. A part of the bow and some sections of the stern were washed ashore. The people of Manzanillo and the Mexican authorities extended every possible assistance to the survivors, housing and feeding them until they were picked up by the St Louis.Out of 338 persons aboard the Golden Gate, only 140 were later accounted for: 198 were lost, together with 1,400,000 dollars in treasure, all the mail, baggage and the entire cargo - nothing was saved. The widows and orphans of the crew who had perished, were voted a pension by the Directors of the Pacific Mail Steamship Co. of one-half of the pay received, and this was paid from July 1862 to January 1864.""The Golden Gate" 1850-1852. Built at New York, Wooden hull 265' x 40' x 31': 2,200 tons. 2 engines. Wheels 31' dia. Accommodation: 300 cabin and 500 steerage passengers. The first steamer especially designed for the Panama traffic."Nicholas and his brother Thomas were both travelling 'steerage'. In the list published in the Daily Alta California August (18th?) 1862, they were listed as 'N C MOCAN' and among those 'LOST': "T MORCAN" Nicholas was among the survivors picked up on 29th July at Manzanillo by the St Louis and arrived at San Francisco on August 6th.Currier & Ives issued vivid coloured lithographs entitled "The Burning of the Golden Gate" - they were already much prized by print collectors in the 19th Century.Royal Cornwall Gazette (a weekly paper) dated 5 Apr 1900 recorded under Deaths: MORCOM, at Miramar, Truro, March 30, Nicholas Cornelius, M.E., son of the late Mr Richard MORCOM, M.E., of Anglesey, aged 65." and in the "West Briton" "He leaves a widow and 2 daughters to mourn their loss. His only son died in Colorado some years ago, where he was a mining student." . This is further proof that the family story that Nicholas's son had died in the shipwreck is incorrect.DWT Note: almost a two thirds of the crew of 96 were saved but only 78 of the 242 passengers. The witnesses at the marriage of John HAMBLY (08507) of Redruth and Jane THOMAS on 13 May 1858 were N C MORCOM and E MORCOM
