His obituary notice in a local paper says Edward was had come to Stawell when young from Ararat where the family had lived in a tent. "On coming to Stawell his father was one of the pioneers who opened up the rich Germania reef, where Edward and his brother helped his father".He "well known in the musical world" having been bandmaster of the Stawell Brass Band, which played the Death March en route to the cemetery. "He also taught the violin, and was looked upon as a musician much above the average." He was "a man of quiet disposition and was much liked by those with whom he came in contact."
