CHRISTENED:

DEATH:
13Mar1914 in Prospect SA AUS. Monumental Inscription in West Terrace Cemetery states that George MORCOMBE was 82 at his death on 13 March 1914. Source 636 gives ref: dist. Ade. sym S b382 p222 Age at death: 82

BURIAL:

EMIGRATION:
Left Plymouth 12Mar1855 in "Sea Park" Arrived in Port Adelaide, SA 25Jun1855Immigration Note: George was described as a "labourer from Devon", but Arnold Edward MORCOMBE wrote that his grandparents came from Cornwall to Australia. This error could have arisen because George worked with many Cornish miners in both Devon and Australia.

Residence Notes:
Census Devon 1851: transcribed as George MORGAMBER, servant, unmarried, 19, House Servant, British Subject [no birth place given]HO/107/1883 Folio 307 Page 7 FHL Film 0221032.
A trade directory of 1864 locates George MORECOMBE, miner, in Kadina. George was probably still nr. Watervale in 1894 (or had returned to the district) as a Web account of Upper Skilly Chapel, which was also also used as a school, reported that:
"In August 1894, 16 years after the school was closed and the house vacated, Mr George MORCOMBE reported that the council property was being destroyed by vandals".

OCCUPATIONS:
BEF 1851-AFT 1851: House servant in Walreddon Farm, Whitchurch.Occupation Note: He was one of three house servants and one farm servant apprentice in the household of John SPRAY, farmer occupying 170 acres, though it is possible that some of them worked in the adjacent manor house and only boarded with John SPRAY..
ABT 1855-AFT 1860: Labourer/Copper Miner in Burra.Occupation Note: Arnold Edward MORCOMBE wrote that his grandfather first worked as a copper miner in Burra, 98 miles north of Adelaide, and then at Moonta until 1878. At Moonta "he became known as Captain MORCOMBE". There is a Morcombe Road in Moonta now..
ABT 1864-1878: Copper Miner/Mine Manager in Kadina and Moonta.

GENERAL NOTES:
It is likely that the George MORGAMBER of Walreddon farm in the 1851 census is the same man as George MORCOMBE. The MORGAMBER surname does not occur elsewhere in the 1851 Devon census and is also absent from the 1861 census of Cornwall and the 1881 UK census. As his birth place is simply recorded as British subject, the person informing the enumerator may have been inaccurate about the illiterate George's surname.
We have also seen a reference to George born late 1831 - Oct 1832 in Whitchurch, Tavistock DEV, son of "William ?MACOMBER?", labourer from Cornwall [Source for this not known and it may be derived from a combination of diverse clues]. If the guess that Catherine Pengelley MORCOMBE was his daughter proves to be correct then George may be the brother of John MORCOMBE [10413] whose father was also named as William MORCOMBE in his marriage certificate
There are 3 buildings close to Walreddon Manor: Upper Walreddon Farm, a house without farm buildings and Lower Walreddon farm, which was nearest to the Manor House. It seems most likely that the Walreddon Farm where George was a house servant is now named Lower Walreddon Farm [cf photo in file]. This is about 6 miles from North Brentor where Catherine Gibbs YELLAND was living. When he married George was described a miner of Whitchurch, so it is feasible that George and Catherine could have met while working in a mine somewhere between North Brenton & Whitchurch
George was an active Wesleyan Methodist who often took services in the chapel. He also devoted much time to working with Temperance Societies. His grandson, Arnold Edward MORCOMBE wrote that George was "an uneducated man who could neither read or write until he met his wife Catherine, who being a school teacher, taught him to do these so necessary things". In September 1874 he joined the Masonic fraternity, being initiated into the "Duke of Edinborough Lodge" (South Australian Constitution).
From Moonta Mines Museum website:"There was no reticulated water to the area until 1890 when a pipeline from the Beetaloo Reservoir in the lower Flinders Ranges was commissioned. Until then the people relied on rainfall, company built dams and soaks in the sand hills at Nalyappa. This water was sold to the miners. The water collected in the miners' underground tanks was often polluted by waste from animals and the mines themselves.Epidemics of typhoid, cholera and diphtheria broke out. In 1873 there were 327 burials in the Moonta Cemetery. There are some 300-400 unmarked graves in the Moonta Cemetery of young children who died during these epidemics. "This is probably the cause of the early deaths of George & Catherine's four youngest children at Moonta between 1860 and 1866.

BIRTH:
1849 in VT USA. No birth record found but birth records were only required from 1850 onwards. The 1850 censusof Middlebury, lists a George F. MORCOM age 3. Was this Frederick - in which case he was older than Mary Jane?in MA USA. USA Federal Census NY 1870: age 21, b. in Massachusetts; Census 1880 MA, Geo.R.MORGAN,32, widower.

DEATH:
01Dec1921 in Middlebury VT USA.

Residence Notes:
1880 Census: FHL Film 1254541. National Archives Film T9-0541 page 122B.
It is very speculative whether the 1880 census entry for "Geo. R. MORGAN" refers to George Frederick MORCOMBE. "Best fit" found in the census for a George R b.in VT c. 1849. "MORGAN's" father born in VT & mother in MA, which conflicts with other evidence.
His uncle Frederick T was living in Malden, within 3 miles of Medford, and other possible relatives were in nearby Melrose and Boston.

OCCUPATIONS:
BEF 1870-AFT 1870: Cabinet Maker in New York.
BEF 1880-AFT 1880: Servant in Medford.Occupation Note: The head of the household, Lucy Ann BROOKS age 69, had a female companion and three male servants.

GENERAL NOTE:
Could this be the same person as George MORCOMB (16046) who was in Brooklyn New York in 1870 and again in 1890?

BEF 1899-AFT 1899: Snake Valley,VIC AUS

Residence Note:
George moved from 6 Gloucester Street to 28 Chapel Street sometime in the 18 months before his marriage to Matilda TREZIES who moved into 26 Chapel Street during the same period. In 1851 a POOLE family of five and William TILLMAN, attorney, were at No.28.

OCCUPATIONS:
BEF 1851-AFT 1851: Butcher in Stoke Damerel.
1852 Labourer in Stoke Damerel.
ABT 1860 Butcher in Preston Hill, Carngham.Occupation Note: `District Diggings' article says that George "is thought to have had a partnership of some kind with Mr W QUINCE". A William QUINCE witnessed the burial of George's brother-in-law Richard SNELL in 1866. In an early print the store has a prominent sign "QUANCE & MORCOMBE - BUTCHERS. A later photograph shows the name has changed to "GEORGE MORCOMBE - BUTCHER". It is not clear whether George William still had a butcher's business himself in 1881, when he is said to have bought a butcher's store for his son George as a 21st birthday present. There is a receipt headed 31 Jan 1881 which reads: "Received from Mr George MORCOMBE the sum of five pounds sterling deposit towards the purchase of store at Preston Hill, Carngham, the price to be fifty pounds to be paid within fourteen days. Signed W.A YOUNGReceived cheque forty Pounds stg. to capital[?] of store. Signed W.A.YOUNG"Possibly he was buying the store which he had previously rented..
BEF 1899-AFT 1899: Butcher in Snake Valley.

GENERAL NOTES:
The IGI has `George William MORCOMBE'. Other sources have `George MORCOMBE' the name which he, presumably, preferred to use. An error in the IGI is a possible alternative explanation. The case for George [William] MORCOMBE, b. in St German, younger brother of Jane SNELL, being the husband of Matilda TREZIES is supported by two arguments:1. There is no other George [or William MORCOMBE of a suitable age in the 1851 census of Devon2. The SNELL and MORCOMBE families seem to have kept close to each other in Australia. The SNELLS emigrated between 1851 and 1856; the MORCOMBEs between 1852 and 1856. The first child born to each family in Australia was in Ballarat in 1856. The SNELLS were in Carngham from c.1865 onwards and the MORCOMBEs were in that town c.1858 to 1865 or later. There is a marriage for Thomas Tras MORCOMB (11209) in 1885 NSW AUS who might be a son of this MORCOMBE family (we do not have a birth record for him). TREZIES has been misspelt on many occasions - so "Tras" might have been the best effort of an Australian enumerator. He could have been born before leaving UK.
The Great Extended Gold Mining Company, Bottle Hill, Carngham was established in 1864. The manager, Joseph OGLE, held four shares. There were 22 other shareholders, including George MARCOMBE of Preston Hill, each of them owning two shares. They all lived locally. On 1st May 1866 all shares in the Duke of Wellington Gold Mining Company (alluvial block claim) at Bottle Hill were transferred to George MORCOMBE from the other 18 shareholders. On 4th May 1866 the Great Extended and Duke of Wellington GMCs were amalgamated, 61 shares being held by George MORCOMBE and 42 shares by Joseph COPELAND
George William MORCOMBE is probably the George MORCOMBE who purchased the following shares recorded in the Mining Shareholders Index CD:4 March 1865 George MORCOMBE, of Preston Hill, bought 20 shares @ £5 in the British Columbia Gold Mining Company of Snake Valley, Carngham22 April 1865 George MORCOMBE, of Ballarat, bought 250 shares @ £2 in the Great Extended Gold Mining Company of Bottle Hill, Cangham.31 Mar 1875 George MORCOMBE, butcher of Preston Hill, purchased 8 shares @ £5 in the Preston Hill Gold Mining Co, N/L of Preston Hill, Carngham.
