GENERAL NOTE:
CHECK: Why are there no 1841 or later records of William and Sarah's four children? The explanation may be linked to the following press report in the The Morning Chronicle (London, England), Wednesday, December 27, 1848; Issue 24706. To summarise: At the Guildhall, William MORCOMB of 12, Earl Street, John's Row, St Luke's and Robert LAND were before Alderman GIBBS. The had been given into custody by Mr Michael GARROD, of the firm of Kent and Co, of Falcon Street, hardware and brush manufacturers, "for having tried to rob his bristle warehouse by means of an impression taken in soap from the proper key". Thomas FELSTEAD testified that MORCOMB had asked for his help in making a key to enter the storehouse. FELSTEAD said that he pretended that he would assist MORCOMB in order to discover the robbery plot. However, MORCOMB then got LAND to make the key - which failed to open the door. After a quarrel with MORCOMB, Felstead told another man about the plot, who, in turn, informed GARROD. When GARROD confronted MORCOMB with evidence from LAND and FELSTED, MORCOMB offered to produce the key if GARROD allowed him to leave the firm [presumably without a charge being brought against him] . MORCOMB and LAND were remanded in custody as GARROD thought there were more persons in the conspiracy. LAND claimed that FELSTEAD had first suggested the robbery.

There was an Elizabeth MORCOMBE dau. of William MORCOMBE (06086) and Mary bapt in Neath on 31 May 1855. If there was a third marriage to Ann, then Elizabeth (17632) was also Anne's daughter.
An unidentified Mary MORCOMBE did die in Okehampton in Q4 1851, but we have no evidence to link Mary nee HOWE with that town in Devon

EMIGRATION:
1854 Arrived in Darlington, ON 1854Immigration Note: According to Marjorie A MORCOMBE, the daughter-in-law of Charles MORCOMBE, his father William went to Ontario ?"from Morecombe Bay, England"?! - very unlikely. Charles is said to be the only member of William's family to go to the USA.

According to a May 10 1917 Obituary in the Weekly Republican of Plymouth IN (where Charles was living) his father first settled "on a farm on which is now located the town of Bowmanville, at which place the convalescing solders are now stationed"
But the possibly better informed Whitby Gazette and Chronicle obituary says that, after moving nearer Whitby, he lived on a farm, which is now occupied by the convalescent hospital, for about thirteen years.

GENERAL NOTE:
Wesleyan Methodist in ONT 1871 Census and "Methodist Canada" in 1881. His 1917 obituary refers to his having been a member of the Methodist Church since his early days and to his work as class leader at the Methodist [Tabernacle?] for many years. His wife Ann's obituary in the Whitby Gazette and Chonicle initially refers to him as Wm. MORCOMBE but, subsequently, twice names her as Mrs Thomas MORCOMBE. This is probably a typographical error. His own obituary two years later in the same person names him as William, as do also a number of other UK and Canadian sources

GENERAL NOTE:
There were no more MORCOMBE births in Totnes until after 1870, so the other child who emigrated with William and Ann [according to her obituary] was born either elsewhere in the UK or, possibly, on board ship.It is assumed that the William MORECOMBE in the 1901 Ontario Census and 1917 death record is the same man but this relies only on the clue that their ages are very similar and that a "William MORCOMBE of Pickering" is mentioned in his father's obituary. The emigration information in the 1901 Census, although three years out, seems a reasonable fit, given the fallibility of memory.
