This may be the John MORKHAM of Gwinear, mason, in bail £40 in the 1781 Quarter Session of Peace "on Cond'n that Jn.Morkham shall appr. at next Sess's to prosecute his Traversete [possibly `Denial at Law'] with effect". At the Lostwithiel Ssssions of 11 January 1781 [ref. QS/1/4/291-298] "a John MORKHAM of Gwinear, mason, to appear at next sessions; Mary MARKHAM of Gwinear, surety. At the Truro Sessions of 26 April 1781 [Ref. QS/1/4/299-306] "John MORKHAM of the parish of Gwinear in this County, mason lately indicted for an Assault and Battery was at this Sessions acquitted of the same for want of Prosecution".In the same year an unidentified "Mary MORKHAM of the same Spr/Sps[?]." was also on bail of £40, with identical conditions, at the Quarter Sessions of Peace. Paul A MORCOM says that the usual formulation was "of the same Place". He is uncertain whether the entry is `Spr' for Spinster, or more likely `Sps' for Spouse. It is feasible that she could be a first wife of John (06014) as he did not marry Grace JONES until 1783 when he was about thirty - but there may prove to be a different connection between the two accusedIt is John MORCOMBE (06014) who is probably the subject of the following prosecution in Truro Sessions of April 22nd 1800: "John MORCOMB, late of the Parish of Crowan in this County, Labourer, was at these Sessions indicted, tryed and convicted for feloniously taking one deal board of the value of six pence, the property of Sir John Aubyn, Baronet. It is ordred that for the said offence, John MORCOMB should be publicly whipped in the Borough of Truro and be then discharged." Sir John Aubyn had his manor and seat at Clowance, near Crowan. There were extensive renovation works at the manor in the early 1800s. John was described as "late of Crowan" as he had, presumably, been awaiting trial in Truro Gaol or Bridewell for some time.
