CHRISTENED:

DEATH:
Dec 1856 in Probus CON. Age at death: 54

BURIAL:
12Dec1856 in Probus CON. Entry on pg 50 of register refers to John MORCOMBE of `Levada'

RESIDENCES:
BEF 1841-AFT 1841: Levardro,Probus,CON
BEF 1851-AFT 1851: Candor,Probus,CON <

Residence Notes:
The cottages at Levardro are half-way between Probus and St Erme, on a road joining the two villages. Colin and Wendy WARD, who are researching the history of their cottage, believe that the building dates back to 1590. Now named Riverside Cottage, Candor
Levardro is made up of 3 Cornish words: lann (=cemetery) but more probably nans (=valley) + bar (=top) and drogh (=broken), thus "valley with a broken summit". Census 1841 Ref: HO107/147.
In the 1840 Tithe Apportionment Book the "Candor" cottage was being occupied by John MORCOM. In 1841 John MORCOMB had one of seven cottages at Levardro occupied by agricultural workers, an eighth housed a carpenter. Also two cottages at "Cander".
The 1841 census records ten cottages in the area of Candor and Levardro with a total of 51 residents. By 2002 there were only two cottages with four occupants! In 1841 "Riverside Cottage only had two rooms downstairs and two upstairs.

OCCUPATIONS:
BEF 1832-AFT 1832: Labourer in Probus.
BEF 1841-AFT 1851: Agricultural Labourer in Probus.

GENERAL NOTE:
Paul BREWER wrote 23/6/00 that "The Levardro sitiuation seems to be that the MORCOMs had a lease, details of which were lost but they held onto it until about 1846. A document at CRO ref PL21/11/1,2 a lease dated 1721 from James Andrew to Mary WILLIAMS has written on the dorse `Blunts lease mentioned within, supposed to be part that MORCOM claims and he had possessed it for so many years without making payments for it, it was thought advisable not to dispute his title' W.S."DWT/AGT made notes from a document of c.1790[?] in Cornwall Records Office referring to the MORCUM's house at Levardro which was on "land unlawfully held by the lessees in consequence of neglect of [?Land?]Lord. Now gone too far to recover." The rest of the document was difficult for us to fully understand in the time available to us and the following are a series of disconnected notes: The land was formerly occupied by GRIEVES. 99 year lease from 24 day of June 1693 had lapsed. Land had been mortgaged. Mr Will HOTTEN needed clarification re house/land occupied by Wm MORCUM [NB forename was very difficult to read and "Wm" may be a crucial misinterpretation]. Douglas KELSALL left it to his brother Edmond. Died 24/6/1693. Land was mortgaged for 99 years to Henry HOCKING Esq. of St Austell. Hocking died. Mr TREMAYNE married the daughter of HOCKENS [?]. Document signed by John GRIEVE.It is uncertain whether this is the same document or an earlier one than the one which Paul BREWER summarised as follows:"A further document, that I did not record the date but probably 1820/30 CRO ref PL46/5 is a letter from John GRIEVE to William STACKHOUSE of Trehane `MORCOMs house at Levarder unlawfully held by lessee in consequence of neglect by Lord. Now gone to far to recover'."DOCUMENT OR DOCUMENTS ABOVE NEED TO BE RE-CHECKED CAREFULLY.Census 1841 lists 8 separate dwellings under the name Levardro, though only one was occupied by any MORCOMs. 1840 Tithe Map Apportionment Book records the house now known as Riverside Cottage as being occupied and owned by John MORCOM. This does not rule out that one or more of the other dwellings might also have been occupied by MORCOMs at some time earlier than 1840. Note by Source 540 in Dec 1999.ADDITIONAL NOTE by DWT: The Tithe Apportionment records of 1843 show "Levarder" as being owned by the Earl of Mount Edgecumbe and others with John MORCOM as lessee and occupier. Plot 1634 was an orchard of 2 roods and 18 perch; 1635 was a homestead occupying 7 perch; and 1636 another orchard of 1 rood and eight perch - total of 3 roods and 33 perch - over three quarters of an acre. The present owner of Lelissick told Paul BREWER that a Percy MORCOM lived at Levarder c.1950/60.
