Henrietta MORCOM (11906)
Family Code: GWENNAPjohn GWENNAPdiggory

BIRTH:
1863 in Maldon VIC AUS. Reg.No.15345. In birth record Henrietta's mother was Jane MORCOM. Most likely to be Mary Jane who had married Edwin in Maldon two years earlier. In marriage record "Hennrie Ettie" born in Carlton. Birth reg.1863 but could have been 1862 when Mary Jane died

RESIDENCE:
BEF 1882-AFT 1882: VIC AUS

GENERAL NOTE:
The listing of Henrietta as one of her children in Jane Francis MORCOM's death certificate (source Lin DAVIS) is very significant but not, I believe, absolutely conclusive. There seem to be four possibilities - in what I speculate to be the rough order of probability:1. Henrietta was the illegitimate daughter of Jane FRANCIS and her brother in law Edwin MORCOM, both recently widowed. Unless Jane had her own family in Maldon, it is likely that Edwin would have been supporting her and her children. There was no other MORCOM family support available in Maldon to help Jane and the children in the six years between the death of James William and her remarriage to William Henry SOMERVILLE. It may be significant that Edwin remarried on 12 Jan 1867 and Jane on 11 Feb 1867, both in Maldon. Were they in the same household until then?2. Henrietta was the legitimate daughter of Edwin and Mary Jane STEPHENS who died in childbirth in 1862. Although Henrietta's birth was registered in 1863, it is not unusual for Victoria birth registrations to lag a year behind the actual birth year. The obvious foster mother would have been Jane Francis whose family Edwin may already have been supporting. The entry of "Jane MORCOM", as mother on the Henrietta's birth registration, may have been a convenient "fudge". When both parents remarried, it would have seemed a sensible decision to leave Henrietta with her half siblings3. Henrietta was the illegitimate daughter of the widowed Jane FRANCIS and an unknown man4. Henrietta was the illegitimate daughter of Jane FRANCIS and William Henry SOMERVILLE. Unlikely as Henrietta was born c. four years before their marriage.Even the birth certificate may not tell us more, unless it gives the exact date of birth of Henrietta and it coincides with the death of Mary Jane STEPHENS, or tells us more about the identity of "Jane MORCOM". What do you think?

CHECK: was there, in fact, a closer relationship? One possibility was that heir WILLIAMS mothers were sisters. but this surname is so common it will be very difficult to prove or disprove this very tentative suggestion

Residence Notes:
In 1841 Henry was living with his siblings Richard, Elizabeth and Eliza. First 5 children registered in Redruth, but home probably in Crofthandy/Gwennap where they were christened.
The 1869 Stawell rate book shows Henry paying the rates on a house in Sloan St in December. In August of the same year the two John MORCOMs had paid rates on two properties in the same street. No MORCOMs found in 1860-1868, but some pages are illegible.

OCCUPATIONS:
BEF 1846-AFT 1846: Gold miner
BEF 1851-AFT 1851: Copper Miner in St Day, Gwennap Parish.
Farmer in Pomonal, nr Stawell.Occupation Note: Henry, after a period when he was gold mining, settled in Pomonal (where Richard and his two brothers were the first to own 3 blocks of land. Richard planted an orchard)..

GENERAL NOTE:
Said to come from a mining family in St Day, Gwennap. We know Henry and all his sons went to Australia. Richard (and other members of the family?) tried gold mining first. Richard and two of his brothers were the first to own three blocks of land near Stawell. Richard established an orchard.Henry was a Wesleyan Methodist.Henry's death was recorded in the Pleasant Creek News: P2, Column 5, on the 7/3/1871." A very sad and sudden death occurred last Monday, to Mr Henry Morcom, who was a resident near the St George's Machine. On the afternoon of the day named, Mr Morcom was assisting Mr Richards into his (Mr Morcom's) house, with some goods which the former had brought there for delivery, when he began to cough up some blood, and on being assisted to a bench by Mr Richards, the unfortunate man made some inarticulate remarks about his chest, and falling back into the arms of his companion, expired within five minutes of the time when he first showed symptoms of illness. Mr Morcom showed no appearance of being unwell before this time; but, on the contrary, was speaking in a lively manner up to the very moment when the blood vessel broke. From what we can learn, it seems likely that an aneurism was the cause of death. The remains were attended to the Cemetery by a large number of friends."[The St George's Machine was probably a crushing battery used for crushing rock before the gold was extracted from it.]
