BURIAL:

EMIGRATION:
Left Falmouth 1838 in "Milo" Arrived in CUBA 1838

OCCUPATIONS:
Tin Dresser
-1838: Miner in Cobre Mine, Cuba.

GENERAL NOTE:
Since the Cuban history of his brother John was very similar, it is probable that this William is the whose sad end is described by both Sharron SCHWARZ and William PAYTON. Pay was exceptionally good for Cornish miners chosen to go the Cobre mine in Cuba [William was hired at £14 per month], so recruiters were able to be selective and hoped to be able to employ young , fit and sober men. However the conditions at Cobre were exceptionally bad, the humid heat and yellow fever, typhoid, small pox, malaria and other diseases taking a heavy toll. In addition a number of those discharged on medical grounds died on the voyage home. The Cornish miners were often required to work alongside West African slaves, a situation which many good Methodists who disapproved of slavery found repugnant. PAYTON writes that those who remained sought solace in the bottle or in religion.

GENERAL NOTES:
Was there another child named Mary Ann born Q3 1853?Post Office Directory 1873: William MORECOM of Langport House, Conyngham Road, Victoria Park, Rusholm, Manchester. Is it this William or his son?
DETAILS OF WILLIAM MORCOM'S WILLTo his wife Elizabeth Ann: "All my Wines and liquors Housekeeping and other consumable Stores and also all the paraphernalia Wearing apparel and linen and the Watches Rings Trinkets Jewellery and personal ornaments usually worn by or reputed to belong to her". His wife, as long as she did not remarry, also shared with his unmarried daughters the use and enjoyment of his furniture, plate, linen, china, glass, books and pictures, jewellery and trinkets (which had not already been assigned to his wife) and other household effects. Elizabeth Ann was required to keep all these items insured from damage by fire for as long as she did not remarry. If Elizabeth Ann remarried the above goods, or the proceeds from their sale, would be divided between Annie MORCOM and Mary Louisa MORCOM "if they both be then living and unmarried or if both shall then be married or widows but if only one of them shall be then married or a widow then I bequeath the whole to the other of such daughters if then living and if either of them be then dead then to the surviving daughter whether married or not".
Cornelia Catherine MORCOM had already been provided for in the will of her grandfather Thomas SUTCLIFFE and was, therefore, only left a legacy of nineteen guineas by William MORCOM.He bequeathed "unto my son William Llewellyn MORCOM and my friend Charles BROWN of the City of Manchester merchant all the rest residue and remainder of my estate and effects whatosever both real and personal (except that Estate vested in me as Trustee or Mortgagee)....". They were to invest the money, the interest to go to William's widow as long as she did not remarry. After her death or second marriage the capital and interest would go equally to his daughters Annie MORCOM and Mary Louisa MORCOM though the same or new trustees would still continue to invest the money."I give and devise all Estates vested in me as Trustee or Mortgagee unto and to the use of the said William Llewellyn MORCOM and Charles BROWN their heirs executors administrators and assigns subject to the trusts and equities affecting the same respectively". The same two men were appointed Executors of his will.NB DWT NOTE: It is possible that I have misinterpreted part of the very convoluted legal language of this will.
Ann CARSON wrote in January 2006:"I wouldn't be surprised if the friend Charles was also his first wife's cousin Charles who was a merchant in Manchester. That Charles was born c1821 at Bridgewater, Somerset, son of James Brown and Sarah Lane, so a cousin of Louisa. He married a Margaret Ellerton and was merchant in Manchester and Yorkshire). Interestingly Charles and Margaret lived at Rusholme in 1871, in a place named Brislington Villa, Victoria Park! Sadly I don't know when or where Charles and Margaret died."

BIRTH:
ABT 1823 in St Day CON. Census 1841: age 22, b. Cornwall; 1851: as MORCOMB, age 28, unmarried, b. St Day. In 1872 register of Adelaide Destute Asylum as William MORCOM age 51, C. of E. NB IT IS SPECULATIVE WHETHER THE CORNWALL AND ADELAIDE William MORCOMS ARE THE SAME MAN.

EMIGRATIONS:
in "Old Calcutta" [Cannot identify this vessel] Arrived in Victoria ABT 1851Immigration Note: According to the Asylum records: "In Australia 21 years. SA 1870 12 months ago". Could Old Calcutta be the town in India rather than a ship? The Cornish William MORCOM is absent from the 1861 census (though he could have died.
Immigration Note: His younger brother Paul (b. c1833) was on the Indian Queen arriving in Victoria in April 1854. There was a Wm MORCOMB age 26 also on board who could be a cousin. [CHECK THIS],
Immigration Note: Williams' sister Ellen (b. 1829) arrived in Victoria in Nov 1853 and Mary (b. 1827) followed in 1862.

Cook in Adelaide.Occupation Note: In Sept 1871 he was convalescent from hospital where he had been the last three months suffering from Pthisis [Tuberculosis], destitute, no relative in colony. Left 23 Nov 1871.[GRG 28/5/1 316 26/9/1871]It was common for the hospital and destitute asylum to pass on patients to each other if one of them was full..

GENERAL NOTE:
William MORCOM is very speculatively placed as a possible partner of Annie MORCOM. However the only evidence for this is the considerable coincidence of William, James and Peter being the only MORCOMs in the the 21 individuals in the Register of Admissions to the Destitute Asylum 1870-1873. Williams entry number was 316/1872) and the boys were 271&2/1872. Maybe, if he was Annie's partner, he was described as having "no relative in colony" because he and Annie were not married. If Annie's maiden name was MORCOM could he be her brother? The Asylum record says that he been in South Australia one year (1.e. arriving c.1871. This does not rule him out as father of James & Peter because we do not know where Annie and her children were before 1872. Is it significant that William and Annie are the only MORCOM/BEs I have recorded in Australia who are known to have suffering from pthsisis [tuberculosis]Note, however, that Peter MORCOM, son of Annie, when he married in 1888 names his father as James MORCOM which is also the name of his older brother.

The South Australia Directory of 1874 lists a MORCOM Wm farmer nr Murdoch's Hill, Nairne. This could refer to this William or, alternatively, his son William John, two of whose sons were married at Murdoch Hill.

GENERAL NOTE:
William MORCOM was one of a group of farmers whose name was on the land Title for a Primitive Methodist Church in the Murdoch Hill area. There is a Land Title Office record that William MORCOM and three other Murdoch Hill farmers bought (for £2!) the land in 1862 from Jabez JOHNSON, which was subsequently transferred to the United Church. These farmers became the original trustees of the Church. Bronte GOULD found that the Murdoch Hill Church was still well maintained. A stone stated "Primitive Methodist Chapel 1866". Services had originally been held in a slab building until the present building was erected in 1866 at a cost of £240. There are no MORCOMs recorded as having been buried in the small cemetery which was in use from 1865 to 1888. From 1884 to 1944 the building also housed a day school
