24Mar1942 Gun Layer for 2nd Battalion Voluntary Defence Corps in Fremantle.Occupation Note: Service No. W67864, next of kin H.MORCOM [was this his father Hugh MORCOM?] He had joined a small bore rifle club and was there approached to join the Voluntary Defence Corps at the age of 16. For the first 6 months they drilled with wooden rifles, but then joined an anti-aircraft gun unit where they practiced every Sunday.
Occupation Note: William's job in the AA unit was gun layer, keeping the gun on target. As there was a shortage of men to pack army and navy stores in the foodstuffs range, William was not called up for the Regular Army..
Occupation Note: People looked slighty askance at a young man in a green rather than brown uniform but this did not worry William. In addition to Sundays he was on duty one night a week, but never saw any action.

GENERAL NOTE:
Most of the information about William Joseph MORCOM comes from a long interview he gave on 27 Feb 1990 to Susan GREEN. This focussed mainly on the work of the Voluntary Defence Corps which several other MORCOMs joined.

The Manchester Times of January 16th 1864 reported that a Mr MORCOM had put forward a motion that the Portico [club] should not open on Sunday evenings. He stated that the poor attendance did not justify asking employees to work seven days a week. He claimed that his reasons were not sabbatical observance.
