ABT 1913-1983: Farmer in Pleasant Hill, nr Ridgeway.Occupation Note: This is a summary of a longer account in MORCOMB FAMILY.Arlie took over his father's farm (the original James D MORCOMB homestead) when his father (James Wallace MORCOMB) moved to Winona in 1927. Arlie had previously helped his father on the farm. The early 1930s were very unprofitable for farmers, but Arlie was able to buy the farm from the estate in 1939.Under James Dodd and James Wallace the farm had concentrated on grain production, James D having bought one of the first horse powered threshing machines on the ridge and James W introducing one of the first steam powered tractors in the 1890s.Earl remembered in his early farming days plowing with a five horse team, working from 7.30 am to dark with an hour and a half off at noon to do other chores. A few years before James Wallace left the farm, they diversified into beef and dairy cattle, as the soil was starting to suffer from too much wheat growing. Wheat yield increased greatly after turning cattle onto the exhausted land for four and a half years.By 1980 the MORCOMB farm had expanded from 120 acres to 369 acres, part of which was rented out..
