In 1881 he and his siblings were being looked after by their aunt Ann MORCOMBE. In 1883 when Charles was about 8, his father John remarried. This probably explains why in his 1900 Montana marriage certificate he states, incorrectly, that his mother was "Mary MORCOMBE whose maiden name was Mary GREET"

BEF Jun 1881-AFT Jun 1881: Miner for Ashurst and King in Stapleton, VA.Occupation Note: Stapleton was originally known as Hartsville or Heartsville.
Farmer and Railroad worker in Stapleton.Occupation Note: When the mining company phased out its operations in the late 1800s, Thomas bought some land from the company and began farming in Stapleton. He also worked for the C & O railroad. He kept the tanks filled with water from the creek for the steam engines. At that time, there was a law or rule known as the Hog Law. According to Woody, the Hog Law stated that the crew could only operate the train for an 8 hour period. If they were not finished the run from Gladstone to Clifton Forge in the 8 hours, then the operator in the train station whereever that train was at the time, put up a red flag to indicate to the engineer that the train needed to pull over and break for 8 hours on a side track. There were 2 tracks at Stapleton during that time and if the train was pulled over there, Tom would have to maintain the steam on the engine and keep the boilers fired while the crew slept in the caboose..
BEF 1918-AFT 1918: Farmer in Stapleton.

GENERAL NOTE:
During the years that he worked for Ashurst and King, he lived in the Morcom house, which belonged tot he mining company. He was a forman for the company and also the rent collector for the tennant houses for the workers. He carried his little wooden box with him when he went to Hartsville, or Heartsville, to collect. Hartsville was located up the branch along Porriage Creek. There were several houses as well as the Beulah Church, which at that time was a Methodist - Episcopol Church. He purchased the house from the mining company on July 23, 1909 according to the deed book in the Amherst clerk's office Deed book 63, pg 447. This tract contained about 190 acres of land along with the Morcom house. Probably the mining operation ceased about that same time. His home is still owned by a member of the family. Stapleton railway station, built on his land, was recently donated to the city cemetery in Lynchburg where it is being set up as a historic artifact.

GENERAL NOTE:
Trewman's Exeter Flying Post or Plymouth and Cornish Advertiser (Exeter, England), Wednesday, April 10, 1872; Issue 5602: " Self mutilation - A short time since a Mrs Taylor (nee Morcom), wife of a foreman printer at Truro, cut her right hand and one or more of her fingers by accidently breaking through a pane of glass. One of the fingers became bent over on the palm, and dissatisfied with the surgical treatment she received and believing that she had lost the use of the hand for life, she became despondent. On Friday morning she appears to have got on the Cornwall Railway, near Truro Vear Cottage; and as the up train approached her she placed her fore-arm on the rail and so received immediate amputation of the hand. The melancholy circumstance became known at once, and she was promptly conveyed to the Cornwall Infirmary. It is stated that after the injury to the hand her mind became disordered; and also that on more than one occasion at the Truro station she had been by railway employees from getting on the line"
