On enlistment was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 154 lbs., chest 35/37, with blue eyes, dark hair and a medium complexion]. Next of kin: Mrs Stella Alison MORCOMBE, c/o Mr Sam SAGE. Appointed a Gunner in the 18th Battery of the Australian Army's 6th Field Artillery Brigade; regimental number 8473 [212]. He sailed from Melbourne on the Parsic on 22 Nov 1915. He met his brother Arnold during a brief stay in Egypt and then embarked at Alexandria on the H.T. Arcadian on 17 March 1916 and arrived in Marseilles on 23 March 1916. He served in Belgium and France with the 6th Field Artillery. In France was promoted to Bombardier on 17 June 1916, to Corporal on 1 August 1916. On 7 May 1917 he was posted to the to the Royal Artillery Cadet School, St John's Wood, London and was subsequently promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 16 Oct 1917 and Lieutenant on 6 January 1918. He had returned to France via Southhampton and Havre on 20 October 1917. On 25 January 1919 he returned to England. Departed Devonport, England on 28 February 1919 on the Anchises, and arrived in Adelaide, South Australia on 10 April 1919. Discharged from the Australian Army at Adelaide on 5 June 1919 owing to the "cessation of hostilities". The First World War Nominal Roll Database has his last unit as 6th Army F.A.B..

ABT 1922-19Apr1942: Farmer in "Minaru".Occupation Note: In 1921 Phil travelled from Ceduna SA to Waddy Forrest in WA to inspect prospective farmland. He selected the 1143 acres of Lot M1283 of the Victoria Location to the east of Coorow and farmed there in the 1920s and 1930s. The plot cost £1000 payable by instalments over 15 years. Philip had a small weatherboard cottage built on the plot and employed teams of clearers. His wife and young son joined him in 1923. In the mid 1930's he extended his farm by purchasing a further 1031 acres of Lot M1294 of the Victoria Location. Later employed the services of Mr BONZA who built a new concrete house on Minaru. Arnold MORCOMBE, in his family history, describe "Minaru" as a model farm in every respect which did well even during the depression years. "Minaru", the name Phil chose, means "tall trees"..
