GENERAL NOTES:
The "Bombay" was a large vessel of 1500 tons, formerly a Man of War. The family's journey, leaving Plymouth on 29th August 1852 and arriving in Melbourne on Christmas Eve, took 120 days. The "Bombay" shipping records show that both Edward Bodille and Jane could read and write.The "Bombay" Journal written by A.GILCHRIST during the voyage gives a most vivid description of the nature and perils of a passage to Australia in 1852. GILCHRIST does not appear to have been either the ship's captain or the doctor. On August 17th the Lord Mayor of London addressed the emigrants before they left Blackwall. In Plymouth, on the 26th, 230 more emigrants boarded the ship. During the next two days 25 sheep, 12 pigs, a cow and a further 8 emigrants were taken aboard, the ship finally sailing at 7 am on the 29th August.The concentration on births, deaths and accidents in the account, suggest that the writer of the Journal may have been charged with keeping a log of these - though names of those born or dying are often not given. The Journal mentions 10 births, including Elizabeth Louis MORCOMBE off Cape Otway, 10 adult deaths and 12 deaths of infants and children. Causes of accidents included colliding with doors, falling down hatchways, falling overboard, and being hit on the head by a heavy rope falling from the rigging.On arrival in Melbourne there was a rebellion by the crew who succeeded in getting the discharge they wanted.The writer of the account repeatedly records divine services being held in the single women's apartment.
Edward was very active in various civic affairs in Devon before emigrating. (Sources 549 and 550). His main activities were:PLYMOUTH CHARTIST ASSOCIATION"In early life Mr MORCOMBE associated himself with a Reform and Liberal party in England and was in 1848 elected by the Plymouth Chartist Association a member of the body which called itself the National Assembly."DEVONPORT MENTAL IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATIONEdward Bodille was Secretary for many yearsSOUTH DEVON DISTRICT OF THE INDEPENDENT ORDER OF RECHABITESDistrict Chief Leader at the time he left EnglandDEVONPORT TOTAL ABSTINENCE SOCIETYHe was presented with an address by the Society when he left EnglandIn Collingwood, Victoria he was active in the Brunswick St Wesleyan Church for 48 years. He strictly adhered to the practice of family Bible reading, morning and evening.An In Memoriam article (Source 550) gives a picture of a most religious and abstemious man of great integrity who was always industrious, but also of a kindly and sympathetic nature, giving much time to assisting family members and others needing help. The Town Clerk of Fitzroy sent the family a message of sympathyin which he said "Councillors unanimously deplore the decease of so worthy a citizen."
