Occupation Note: John Henry James MORECOMBE was enlisted in 23 London Regiment on 12 December 1915. His age was then 28 years and 9 months. He embarked for France on 14 July 1916. He reported sick with bronchitis on two occasions in France. He returned to a home posting on 15 September 1916 and arrived again at the front on 17 March 1917. During ?February? 1918 he had a fortnight's home leave. He was promoted Lance Corporal on 28 Apr 1918 and Corporal on 21 May 1918No 701763 John Henry James MORECOMBE was discharged from the 23 London Regiment as permanently unfit on 27 Feb 1919. He was given a single man's pension on account of nephritis causing 20% disability. The disability was diagnosed on 13 Aug 1918 in France when he reported sick with Trench Fever. He was admitted to hospital on 2 September 1918 with symptoms including very weak, giddiness on standing, constant lumbar pain and profuse sweating. He was diagnosed as having nephritis, probably of some weeks duration. His general health improved while in hospital. The condition was attrributed to his war service. He returned to the UK on 2 September 1918.The final date for payment of his pension was later extended by 52 weeks on 2 February 1920. Next of kin given as mother (no name) 68 Speke Road, Battersea.

GENERAL NOTE:
In 1911 John Thomas and Elizabeth Ann and their combined family of ten children, aged 6 to 18, were living in a four living room house.Durham Chronicle - 18 Mar 1938 obituary: mentions his interest in the brass band movement, 40 years an active member of Murton Colliery Prize Band, treasurer for 15 years. Horn solist - won many gold medals. Conductor of Salvation Army Bandfor a short period. Member of the Murton Branch of the Druids Lodge, and treasurer for many years, he also served on the management committee of the Durham Club and Institute Union. Representatives of brass bands in all parts of the countyattended the funeral at Holy Trinitay Church, Murton. His 3 sons and 3 stepsons were all members of Murton Band and his son Albert was the secretary at the time of his father's death. There was silver trophy called the "Morcombe Rose Bowl" which was played for in brass quartet competitions.
