GENERAL NOTE:
Although we can speculate about the identity of the father(s) of James and Peter we have no direct evidence and this remains the most frustrating "brick wall" in our MORCOM research. What follows is largely unproven. No marriage record has been found, nor does there seem to be records of the births of James and Peter in the UK or AustraliaWe do not know if Annie's MORCOM's surname was her maiden name or her partner's. Nor do we know if Annie and her sons were in Adelaide between 1864 (the birth of her elder son James) and 1872 when they were registered in the Adelaide Destitute Asulum.James could have been named after his father. Peter names his father in his marriage certificate as James MORCOM. Was this accurate? Or did he borrow his brother's forename to hide from his in-laws that he was illegitimate. The migration of the two brothers across Australia and to Canada and South Africa suggests they were trying to put as much distance as possible between themselves and their unhappy start in life?James, in his marriage certificate, names his adoptive father as W. DUNN , who in James's original boarding out papers was described as "farmer, Wesleyan, Mt Charles in Woodside "[elsewhere "Charleston"]. This is only 8 miles from Murdoch Hill where William MORCOM (04550) 1829-1895 was farming with his large family. The DUNNs and the MORCOMs must have known each other - so was there a family connection between James and William MORCOM, or was their proximity just a coincidence?If we presume that a James MORCOM was the father of James and Peter, born in 1863 and 1866). then I currently have two alternative candidates:James MORCOM (04737) 1844-1916, son of Samuel MORCOM owner of the Temperance Hotel, was in Adelaide for at least part of the 1863-66 period, but was travelling widely as an advance agent for circuses and stage shows after 1866. His father became bankrupt, and James took over as Leasor of the hotel. from 1867 to 1894. However, Samuel remained in the hotel and may have been still managing it, while James could have been still working as an Advance Agent in the period Annie and the two boys were in the Destitute Asylum. James married Martha ROBERTS in 1877, three years after Annie's death.James MORCOMB (05945) 1822-1873, son of William MORCOMB and Elizabeth nee TYACK. James died in May 1973, fifteen months before Annie. His wife Elizabeth nee SANDERS, who he had married in1842, did not die until 1899. The only reasons for considering him are that he was a James MORCOM/B/E living in Adelaide c. 1864-1874 and was the brother of William MORCOM (see 3 above). . If we regard, with suspicion, Peter's naming of his father as a James MORCOM, then the only known strong candidate becomes a stray William MORCOM (13491), which is not a helpful clue as there about 700 variants on William MORCOM/B/Es in this database! It may be highly significant, or a remarkable coincidence, that William, James and Peter were the only MORCOMs in the the 21[male?] individuals in the Register of Admissions to the Destitute Asylum 1870-1873. However he may have been discharged before Annie and her boys entered the Asylum.: In Sept 1871 he was convalescent from hospital where he had been the last three months suffering from Pthisis [Tuberculosis], destitute , no relative in colony. Left 23 Nov 1871. Annie cause of death in August 1973 was given as pthisis. The most likely fit for this William was born in St Day, Cornwall in 1823. A brother and two sisters emigrated to Victoria so it possible that the older William preceded them to the same state c. 1851. If this is the correct William, then no record has been found of him in Australia before his appearance in the Destitute Asylum records. A final possibility, if Annie was nee MORCOM, is that William was a relative, not partner, of Annie.
