BIRTH:

DEATH:

BURIAL:
14Oct1848 in Llanafan, St Afan CGN. Angican church. Only evidence for identity of the husband of Hannah nee EDWARDS is this burial record in Llanafan. It fits with his absence in 1851 census and his probable birth date. It is known that Elisha's brother James was near Llanafan in 1841

An Elisha had married Sarah HICK in Q1 1870 Southampton - could it have been this one? William DAWKINS, schoolmaster, (living in Redborough) had married Mary Elizabeth MORCOMBE from Pembroke (a relative) - this may be a coincidence.

Four daughters buried half-way down near path on left hand side of cemetery.1895 Slater's Directory: 29 Queen's Road, Aberystwyth. There is some confusion about Exeter or Gwennap House (both have been used) - think Gwennap seems more likely as Elisha was born there, but perhaps the name changed as they moved from 29 to 45 Queens Road.

ABT 1854-ABT 1856: Copper Miner in Keweenaw Co., MI.
ABT 1856-1863: Miner in Norwich Mine and Minnesota Mine, Ontonagon, MI.Occupation Note: Ontonagon was a copper mining area nr. Lake Superior. According to the "Norwich" list of names published in 1996 by Joseph R.Papineau, Norwich was an area of considerable activity between 1850-80. Miners and families moved onwhen the copper was worked out. List includes Elisha MORCUM..
1860-ABT 1865: Mining Captain for Superior Mines in Rockland, Ontonagon Co., MI.Occupation Note: His appointment as Captain was due to "his great practical knowledge ..... and his abilty to contact men". He may also have obtained much expertise (and confidence) from his father and grandfather (both Henry) being Mining Captains. The Federal Population Index places Elisha in Rockland as early as 1860. His brother William Henry was also in Rockland in 1860..
BEF 1870-AFT 1870: Miner in Ontonagon.
ABT 1865-1877: Mining Captain in Nonsuch Mine, ?MI.
1877-ABT 1884: Mining Captain and Mine Superintendent.for Menominee Mining Co.in Quinnesec, Menominee Co., MI.Occupation Note: "He took charge of the Quinnesec underground work ..... and discovered and opened the great Chapin Mine, which is one of the best iron mines in Michigan." This probably refers to the Chaplin deposits at Iron Mountain which were discovered by his father-in-law, John WICKS, in c.1878, shortly after Elisha arrived in Quinnesec."The History of Upper Peninsula, Michigan" (Published in 1880s or 1890s ) reports that the town was laid out by John L. Buell in 1877. He erected the first buildings but for a time it attracted no settlers. However it prospered with the discovery of nearby iron deposits and the establishment of a railway terminus. It lost some of its local prominence as the railway was extended and other iron ore mines were established in the region. It had three church buildings - Swedish Lutheran, Swedish Methodist and Catholic.
Mar 1884-14Jun1887: Mining Superintendent for Minnesota Mining Company in Soudan, Vermilion Lake, MN.Occupation Note: This was an underground iron mine. See Notes in Elisha.doc for extended accounts of journey from Michigan to Minnesota and Elisha's work in the latter state.Samuel P. He served for many years as a member of the Board of Public Commisioners of St Louis Countyand was chairman of the board. Mining ConsultantOccupation Note: Samuel P Ely sent Elisha several times to open iron mines in Cuba. He also explored and opened the mines at Mckinley an Coleraine in the Mesabi range.

GENERAL NOTES:
From account written for MI State Who's Who (Source 33) : "In the autumn of 1882 [i.e. while at Quinnesec] Captain Morcom was nominated to represent the district legislature by the Republican party. He was popular with the people of the district. He was also sent as delegate to the Republican State Convention at East Saginaw. Captain Morcom's characteristic energy has been displayed on behalf of the people since he has been a member of the Committee of Mines and Minerals, also the State House of Correcture, ????? and rules and joint rules. He introduced many important bills and saw them successfully through.""The History of Upper Peninsula, Michigan" adds that, in 1878, he was elected Supervisor of the town of Quinnesec and also School Director. He was a Freemason. A Cornish-L message (26.11.97) from Alan Trevarthen describes the Cornish lodges of the Upper Peninsula, MI as being the nearest equivalent to trade unions, but with also the function of serving out rough justice in the Cornish mining community e.g. one man who regularly beat his wife was, after disregarding several warnings, himself was beaten up in the middle of the night and left town the next morning. The lodge ensured that the wife had a job and was cared for.

It is intriguing that Elisha P chose to go to Tower only two miles from the Soudan mine which his namesake Captain Elisha MORCOM had established in 1884. Was it a family connection, or did Captain John MORCOM know Captain Elisha, or was it Cornish centre?
Note also that Captain Elisha's son was also Elisha P. The lawyer Elisha second name P...? could have been after his step father James PRATT or after his grandmother Mary POPE

For seven years he has acceptably served as city attorney of Woodburn, and at the same time has had in charge the greater part of the important cases in the neighbourhood.
