GENERAL NOTES:
A. C. TODD "The Cornish Miner in America":But in the clay pits of St Austell a man would have to work very hard to earn as little as 20 cents a day, so clayworker Arthur Morcam dragged himself off to Butte (Montana), arrived in the middle of a depression, moved on to Houghton (Michigan, where I grew up) was given a job by the Cornish captain at the Quincy (a Kendall from Roche) and then, with Philip Dyer (whom he had known at Penwithick), came to rest in the Homestake, no more to shovel muck but to direct men on the shift".Elsewhere in his book A.C.Todd mentions the Homestake Gold Mine in South Dakota, and the nearby town of Lead, pronounced `Leed'. He also says that Arthur (from Penwithick) had all five of his sons serving in the 1939-45 War.
Dan TOMS quotes from the Lead Daily Call newspaper of 1913 a description of carol singing outside the town pharmacy by a group of 16 Englishmen who sang five Cornish carols written by Thomas Merritt of Illogan. They included a Arthur MORCOM.TOMS also lists among the prominent businessmen of Lead in the early years of the 20th century "the MORCOM Family (Morcom's Apparel)". [DWT Note: there were also drapers among the possible ancestors of Arthur MORCOM in Cornwall]
Jack MORCOM "The Arthur and Maggie MORCOM Family":Jack describes an incident while Arthur was working at the Open Cut: "A memorable event while working at this job was helping to stretch the cable across the Open Cut when the noted tight rope walker, Ivy BALDWIN, walked across the Open Cut during the July 4th celebration in 1916.......Margaret and Arthur MORCOM were devout Methodists and worked in many church activities throughout their lives. Margaret taught Sunday school for many years. After Arthur's retirement, he became a charter member of the Young at Heart organization of which he was president for many terms......Arthur visited Cornwall, England for the first time in 1958, fifty two years after coming to America"

GENERAL NOTES:
EXTRACT FROM OBITUARY OF PROF. J M VERTELLI BY THOS H KERR IN SPHINX [Magician's Magazine] 1914 Vol 12 No 12 Page 235"..........In 1862 , he won the championship medal for long range rifle shooting and in 1863 he made his debut as a performer on the flying trapeze. In 1865 he was employed by Barry Sullivan , the famouse tragedian, to appear in a triple trapeze act at the Theatre Royal, Melbourne. In 1866 he bacame a tight rope walker, accomplishing perilous feats on lofty wire ropes. Then followed magic work in which he was engaged at most exclusively for the rest of his professional career. After visiting every town of consequence in Australia and Tasmania, he left for Chine and Japan where he was very successful. On October 2, 1877, he arrived at San Francisco. from that city he made many coast trips - north and south - and finally left on an extended tour of the States in 1887. After appearing in many eastern cities, he returned to Berkeley, Calif. on April 5 1897. The next year, his son Harry, 22 years of age, was accidentally drowned in San Francisco Bay, while duck hunting. This was a sad blow to the father for he was an only son and gave promise of a bright future. In 1898 he was stricken with paralysis of both feet and was never afterwards able to use them, and for more than fifteen years could only wheel himself round his own house and garden. Three years ago he lost his wife, but in spite of this added sorrow he maintained a cheerfulness of disposition under desperate circumstances that was perfectly wonderful. After the paralytic attack, he turned his attention to astrology and card reading which then became his sole means of livelihood. He was a very honorable man in all his dealings, strictly temperate in his habits, cheerful in the midst of most discouraging conditions, and has left the world a record of a life well spent.

In November 2012 Susan DUNN sent me the following information:"Finally we have an official date for the Mayor to unveil the sculpture of Vertelli/Morcom. The ceremony will be on November 30.It is definitely a sculpture, not a representational statue, and it is beingplaced on a very historic corner just near the site of the Old North Road(which Morcom would have travelled on), right in the heart of the city. The fact that the sculptor is AP (Bill) Dangar of the "Dangar Falls" familyis particularly felicitous.""Wording for plaque:ON THE WIRE, 2011This sculpture by BILL DANGAR was accepted as a gift from the artist to thepeople of Armidale by Mayor Peter Ducat and Councillors on 23 July 2012.On Monday April 2 1866, John Morcom OUT, known as Signor Vertelli, crossedDangars Falls on a wire rope at a height of about 600 feet above the gorge -firstly with a balancing pole, then with a wheelbarrow and then bysomersaulting across. He was watched by a picnic crowd of over 200 who ³enjoyed themselvesheartily² and who collected the sum of £11 pounds for him, according to areport in The Armidale Express of the time."
