BIRTH:
ABT 1834 in Kea CON. Census 1841: age 7; Census 1851: Richard MOORCOMB, age 17, son, b. Kea - he was living with his father Samuel and step mother Mary.

DEATH:
ABT 1879 in CON. Wife was "married" in 1861 and 1871 censuses (although he was absent from home). There is no mention of his being deceased when his daughter Alice married in 1878, but Elizabeth Jane was a widow by 1881.Only suitable CON death cert.for a Richard in Cornwall between 1860 and 1881 is Q2 1862 Truro, but this is very likely to be a different Richard. In view of his travels, a death overseas or on board ship seems more likely.

RESIDENCE:
ABT 1834-AFT 1851: Slitscombe, Kea,CON

GENERAL NOTE:
It is possible that he is same man as the Richard MORCOM (09078) who was in California between 1868 (when he was 33) and 1872, when he was in a Register of Foreign Born Voters. However, in view of his daughters later settling in Victoria, there is a possibility that he was the Richard, age, 30 on the "Tornado" which arrived in Victoria on July 1866. He may have been accompanied by a cousin William MORCOM (08525) and John MORCOM, possibly the son of another cousin. It is not impossible that he was in both Victoria and California as some Cornish miners "followed the gold".

Richard developed a complicated gravitational irrigation system for his orchard. According to a report in the "Ararat Advertiser" he was exporting apples to London before 1890..
-16Dec1883: Miner for Stawell Pleasant Creek Cross Reef Company.in Stawell.Occupation Note: In the Annual Report of the Chief Inspectors to the Chief Secretary of Mines there is report [No 25] of a Richard MORCOM being "injured compo" [injured and received compensation from the Cross Reef Co.) on 16 Feb 1883 in Ararat District, Stawell Division. For the machinery accident he received £12 10s. This Richard is the only MORCOM of that name known to be resident in the Stawell/Ararat district at that time. We cannot rule out the possibility that one of two other Richard MORCOMs, known to be resident elsewhere in Victoria in the 1880s, may have worked at Ararat for a time..

GENERAL NOTE:
CHECK: Are the pre 1881 and 1901 Richard MORCOMs identical? The husband of Ruth, and presumed father of Olive, was recorded in 1901 as about five years older than the earlier Richard. Did his relatives wrongly inform the enumerator about his age, or did the enumerator erroneously read 38 in the household schedule as 33?A 21 year old Richard MORCOM arrived in New York on 14 September 1883 aboard the "City of Rome" from Liverpool. Could this explain the difficulty of finding him in the 1891 UK census? Did he and Olive (of whom no further record has been found] return to the States after 1901?
