GENERAL NOTES:
May have married Elizabeth Q3 1868?Census 1841 at Rose Cottage: William age 20 and James age 18 MORCOM also listed with the family. 1841 does not give relationships. The house was probably sold after the death of John (his son ) and wife Catherine in 1903. House was a gardening centre known as Rose Villa in the 1980s.His will in 1871 was witnessed by John LOWRY, manager of Tycanol Colliery (at first thought to have married a MORCOM) but have now found the following in Census 1881:LOWREY John Geo., Colliery Manager, living at Ty Newydd, Whitford, Flint, Wales with his wife Martha Anne 24 b.Flint, and children all born in Hawarden, Flint (Adeline Beatrice 2, Geo.Herbert 3 and Ethel 4 months) and servant Mary Anne JONES 17 b.Meliden, Flint. If the same John LOWRY, he was very young to be a colliery manager in 1871.Presume MORCOM family moved from Cornwall to Wales between 1847 (second Mary born in Gwennap) and March 1848 because Hannah (Elisha's daughter) was born 8 Jan 1849 in Clase, Morriston, Wales.
Joseph MORCOM - THE PRIMITIVE METHODISTAs a boy he had thought of becoming a preacher and this idea became stronger after his marriage in 1826. Soon afterwards he became a Primitive Methodist. He joined Lanner Moor Primitive Methodist Chapel in 1831 and in 1832 was appointed Superintendent of the Sunday School at Carn Marth Primitive Methodist Chapel, a post he held for fourteen years until 1846, when he left to take up a post in Morriston near Swansea. .Audrey Elvira SQUIRES (nee PHILLIPS) believes that, in 1859, Joseph and a man named BAYLIS founded the Primitive Methodist Chapel in Sway Road, Morriston near Pentrepoeth School. There is a plaque somewhere celebrating this.. Another source says that Joseph's close associate in the venture was a John BOWDEN from North Devon.A fuller account of Joseph's religious activity in South Wales is given in the Social Organisations section of the MORCOMBE website

GENERAL NOTE:
Only other information is that he is on a photograph which is in the possession of R.Jack WHITFORD of Meyersdale, Somerset Co, PA. Photograph shows John, Edward and Joseph, presumably taken in Pennsylvania Joan CRITCHLEY's aunt Cathleen said that Joseph brought back Katie to the UK. She may have stayed with her mother's HOCKING parents in Camborne until Edith returned from the USA c. 1898/99. If the visit was a return trip with Catherine to introuce her to Joseph's mother Joanna then it would probably have been before her assumed death in 1894.Wikipedia gives the following explanation for the name of Joseph's home in 1887"A blowing house was a building used for smelting tin, using bellows. In Cornwall and on Dartmoor in Devon, the furnace was usually made of granite blocks, sealed with clay. The concentrated tin ore (cassiterite) was mixed with charcoal and the bellows were usually operated by a water wheel. The blowing house method of smelting tin was probably introduced early in the 13th century........... From the beginning of the 18th century, this method was gradually superseded by reverberatory furnace smelting, which used higher temperatures and powdered anthracite as fuel."

Joseph probably first emigrated to the USA c. 1882. Joseph may have worked in mines in Grass Valley, Caifornia, and in Colorado before 1885 when he joined his elder brothers Thomas, William and Charles in working in the Anaconda Mines in Granite County, Montana, and purchasing a ranch three miles NW of Clinton, a small settlement which was near the larger town of Missoula. The Cornish American Connection has Joseph MORCOM travelling from Linkinhorne (where his mother was then living) to Granite in 1891. As he does not appear in the UK 1881 census this return may have been before the census or he could have arrived in the UK and returned to Montana in 1891 after the census.

BIRTH:
ABT 1743 in WOR?.

OCCUPATION:
ABT 1768 Baptist Minister in Chacewater.Occupation Note: Joseph Hodge MORCOM was the first minister at the Baptist Church in Chacewater , coming there a year after the chapel was built in 1768. "He is said to have been born in Worcestershire in 1755, though the place of his birth is uncertain. He was related by marriage to the HORNBLOWERS before coming to Cornwall, having married Jonathan’s eldest daughter, Johanna, eight years older than himself. DWT Note: Jonathan HORNBLOWER later lived at Whitehall. Soon after coming to Truro Joseph MORCOM was appointed minister at Chacewater, and conducted services at Truro and Chacewater alternatively.. The Baptist Chapel, founded at Chacewater, in 1768, was one of the first of this denomination in Cornwall. Three years earlier a Baptist Chapel was established in Marketstreet, Falmouth, the first minister there being a young Cornishman, Matthew Anstis, born at St. Germans, in 1740. He was then only 25 years of age and had studied for two years at the Baptist Academy in Carmarthen, Wales. It is possible that the HORNBLOWER family were the cause of the introduction of this denomination into Cornwall. The Baptists did not make any great headway in the county until the coming of the Rev. Opie Smith to Redruth in 1801, when congregations were formed in several towns. Till that time there appears to have been chapels only at Falmouth, Chacewater, Truro, and probably at Penryn."
