William Henry MORCOM (07421)
Family Code: GWENNAPjohn PERRANWORTHALwilliam

BIRTH:
Q4 1852 in Redruth CON. Margaret ARCHER has Oct 1852 in Hicks Mill [from his marriage cert] and nr. Frogpool [from his birth cert.] - both places are in Gwennap, near boundary with Perranworthal where his parents married. The GRO entry of Q4 1852 in Redruth would fit this date.

DEATH:
1911 in Ballarat VIC AUS. Reg.No.7558. Son of William & Lydia nee "VERRAIN" Age at death: 58

EMIGRATION:
in "Monarch" Arrived in Victoria, Australia Nov 1859Immigration Note: Code B, Fiche 170, page 003. Aged 6 yrs. Arrived with his mother

RESIDENCES:

1909 374,Humffray Street,Ballarat East,Ballarat,VIC AUS <

Residence Notes:
The Sands and McDougall's Ballarat & District Directory 1906-1907 contained the 1906/7 address and this cryptic entry: "(Loyal Prince Alfred Lodge" - presumably means he was a mason.
Residence/s Note: Another 1896-97 Directory has him at 374 Humffray Street

OCCUPATIONS:
1888-1889: Railway Fitter in Ballarat.
BEF 1899-AFT 1909: Railway Employee in Ballarat.
Fitter in Ballarat.Occupation Note: Occupation comes from the baptism record of his daughter Avis Mary in 1921, ten years after the presumed date for his death..

GENERAL NOTE:
In the GRO his birth is entered as `William', but, in her Australian birth record, Lilly Verran is entered as daughter of `William Henry'. We assume that W and WH are the same person as his mother was Lydia VERRAN.Margaret ARCHER writes that "After William died his son William Henry , aged seventeen, built her [his mother] a home on the outskirts of Ballarat, supported her, his brothers and sisters, including Lydia, a posthumous child. He was 34 when he married Susan WILLIAMS and, at that time, he was a mainstay of the Wesleyan church nearby"Was he the William MORCOM, miner of Clunes, who on 25 June 1879 bought 1 share at £80 in the Skipton Street Mine, Ballarat, owned by the Williams Freehold Mining Co.?

GENERAL NOTE:
NB This is a speculative entry. More evidence needed that the William H MORCOM, with his family in the 1891 and 1881 census, is this William Henry b.c. 1856 in St Blazey and who we believe to have emigrated to NZ in 1884. He was living with Johanna RULE nee JEFFERY} in 1891 and [if correctly identified] was a nephew of her deceased husband John MORCOM. In 1891 he was living next door to Sarah (nee HOALE], widow of his uncle William MORCOM.No UK marriage has been found for William and Lilian. Could they have married in NZ, come home to raise there family, and then all emigrated again. None of the family have been identified in UK marriage and death records after 1901

GENERAL NOTES:
As William Isaac and Mary Jane MORCOM had children born in St Agnes in 1884, 1885, 1887, and 1888. It seems likely that William was with his family in Cornwall between these dates. He does not appear in the 1891 census of England, Scotland or Wales
Further children were born in 1895 and March 1888, and by the 1901 census Mary Jane was a widow. William had 3 siblings who between them lived, at various times in the 1880s and 1890s in Nova Scotia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan
Two of his sons emigrated to the States after his death. It, therefore, appears quite likely that William Isaac was working in the USA for most of the time between 1888 and his death.
It is, unfortunately, difficult to prove this as most of the US 1890 census was destroyed in a fire, and few State death records for the period are easily obtainable. There is a record of a Wm MORCOM, carpenter, sailing on the Teutonic from Liverpool to Montreal, arriving on 18/8/1892 - however there are manyother William MORCOM born around 1855.

Jim MORCOM, in a letter of 1 Oct. 1875 to his brother in law George James McKAY describes the family's journey back to Moberley MO from Hemmingford ONT after the baptism of William James on 16th September. The Great Trunk train was 5 hours late into Detroit, so they missed their Michigan Central connection and were a day late arriving in Moberley. They had started with plenty of milk for the baby but it soured with only a quarter of the journey completed. They had some trouble in getting food for the baby but were eventually able to buy a can of condensed milk in Chicago.
