GENERAL NOTE:
The barque "John" set sail on May 9th 1855 bound for Quebec with a crew of 19, 154 adult passengers, 98 children and 16 infants - a total of 287 persons. The "John" went aground on the Manacle Rocks off St Keverne. It was refloated but badly damaged and headed towards the shore. 194 passengers were drowned, though only 123 bodies were washed ashore. None of the nineteen crew were killed which led to a great deal of public condemnation. However, this was probably because the crewstayed on the deck and were eventually rescued by other boats, while many of the passengers climbed into the rigging with the children and infants. Most of the deaths were probably due to the rigging collapsing under the weight so that the passengers were thrown into the sea. Captain Rawle, who was also the owner, was tried for manslaughter but acquitted. An enquiry concluded that the disastrous navigation error was probably caused by the inaccuracy of a new compass. Many of the bodieswashed ashore were buried in a mass grave in St Keverne. It is not recorded that the bodies of Jane MORCOMBE and her children were ever recovered. Their deaths are not recorded in the GRO BMD records. Most of the passengers were from North Devon and heading for Canada, a popular destination at that time.
