Immigration Note: The second AGM of the Company in 1848 recorded that it had brought 580 adult immigrants to South Australia aboard the `Rajah' "before July 1847", but it is not known whether this was on one or more voyages.
Immigration Note: According to the obituary of his son John, Samuel arrived in SA with 250 men - it was common for mining captains to recruit theri own work force before leaving Cornwall.

Residence Notes:
He was still at the Temperance Hotel in a 1874 Directory. It is not known if the 78 Hindley Street address is the same as the Temperance Hotel. There is a 26 Nov 1886 (ref.503) coroner's report on a hotel fire in Hindley St. which names a Samuel MORCOM.
Victoria Coroners sometimes investigated fires even if there was no death involved. The coroner concluded that the fire "was caused by some plumbers who were working on the roof.... considerable amount of damage to roof & ceiling by fire & water
The plumbers were cautioned by the coroner

1847-1850: Mine Captain for Montacute MineOccupation Note: Paul A MORCOM writes "On his arrival in South Australia, Samuel pioneered mining operations in the newly discovered mineral zones.He was first mentioned in the 1849 S.A. Almanack sub-titled section "Mines and Mining Companies in South Australia" at the Montacute copper mine, as in charge of 24 men who, with wives and family, constituted a busy, orderly community at thevillage of Montacute, about 11 miles north east of Adelaide.According to Phillp PAYTON, the Montacute mine was abandoned in 1847 and "was operational again in 1848 under the management of Captain MORCOM"The Montacute Mine was purchased from the Government by Messrs.Frederick DUTTON, BAKER, HAGEN and HART, at £1550. The property was leased to the [London] Australian Mining Co. for 3 years.The largest production to date [1849] was 800 tons in 1846, with richest ore estimated at 33% and poorest at 18%. Samuel was also credited for being the first to find gold in the Montacute Mine."Samuel also initiated Wesleyan sevices at Montacute in the mid 1840s..

ABT 1851-ABT 1853: Miner in Castlemaine, Victoria.Occupation Note: Samuel's obituary in`The Observer" states that, after mining at Reedy Creek, Samuel and his family returned to North Adelaide "but in the early part of the gold rush he went to Victoria. He experienced a full share of the exciting times.......He returned from Victoria in the early part of the 50s." As he then opened the Temperance Hotel, he may have been fortunate, like many at Forest Creek, in finding gold on his claim..
ABT 1854-Feb 1867: Inn Keeper for Temperance & Family Hotel in Adelaide.Occupation Note: The 18 April 1891 Obituary on page 28E of "The Observer" said that Samuel had been associated with the Temperance Hotel [cf map in SA file] for about 37 years. "He returned from Victoria in the early part of the 50s, and took the building in Hindley Street afterwards known to many thousands of people. It was occupied by the late Dr William Gosse, but was transformed into the Temperance Hotel." Samuel had been a lecturer on temperance subjects before leaving Cornwall. In Adelaide he was a leading member of the local branch of the teetotall Independent Order of Rechabites which held theirmeeting at his hotel.Initially the hotel catered for well off families visiting Adelaide from the country. Later as many as 200 immigrants stayed at the hotel at one time. Another source reports that a Labour Office was incorporated into the Hotel. Newly arrived miners & other immigrants, with their families, were directed from the Port to Samuel's establishment. Subseqently the Government undertook to provide initial accommodation for jobless newly arrived immigrants in Samuel's Hotel - up to 300 at a time.The South Australian Register of Wednesday 28th August 1874 reports on the rescue of passengers from a ship which had foundered off Adelaide: "The steamer reached Port Adelaide about 6.30 o’clock, and the passengers proceeded to the city by the 6.30 p.m. train. The single females were located at the Servant’s Home, and the others, to the number of 200 men, women, and children proceeded to Morcom’s Temperance Hotel. Mr. Morcom had official notice on Monday that he would be expected to accommodate 70 or 80 or even 100 at a push, and he had made preparations for the reception of a large number. When the immigrants landed at the Port, however, he did not receive any intimation of the fact, and he did not expect them at the late hour at which they arrived at his premises. Consequently when they got there, in a rather hungry state, some of them mentioning that they had received nothing to eat since morning, and there was dissatisfaction; but food was soon provided, and a better feeling prevailed as a result. No official was in charge of the new-comers, and we are informed that some of them had a difficulty in finding the hotel. Fortunately Mr. Morcom’s premises are commodious, and he managed to find quarters for the whole of the people who flocked to his establishment."According to a web site about the Ballinghall Family: "One 13 February 1867 Samuel declared himself unable to meet his creditors. It was reported in the Insolvency Court that his liabilities totalled £1063.7s9d while his assets (including the sale of his furniture) totalled only ££428.16s.3d. Samuel stated that from £1500 to £2000 in ready money passed through his hands each year, but apart from listing the debts owing to him , he kept no account books and did not have a bank account. There was an inference of improper use of money loaned to him, but this was dismissed. A petition to annul his insolvency ws lodged but it was postponed because of his poor health. The result is unknown, but at this time James MORCOM succeded his father in leasing the Temperance Hotel and in operating the Labor Mart , yet Samuel continued to be associated with the business and in living in the hotel for another 23 years.".

He placed domestic servants, dairy maids, farm servants, station cooks, ploughmen, grooms, bullock drivers etc with pioneer land owners all over the colony..
ABT 1864 Tracer of Lost Relatives in Adelaide.Occupation Note: Phillip PAYTON in his book "The Cornish Miner in Australia" refers on pg 199 to a Mr S. MORCOM who advertised in the West Briton in January 1864 offering to trace lost relatives in South Australia for 2s.6p. with an additional charge of 5s.0d. if advertisements were to be placed in newspapers. This was almost certainly Samuel (or less likely his son Samuel) who were in an unique position to trace miners who had arrived in Adelaide.

GENERAL NOTES:
James MORCOM in his article recalls that the family were at the Reedy Creek copper mines near Palmer for five years after their arrival in Australia c.1848. Yet during this period there is evidence that Samuel was a mine captain both at Tungkillo mine, Reedy Creek, and in charge of the mine at Montacute about 30kms to the west.Was Samuel, as a senior mine captain, in charge of more than one mine at the same time? This was sometimes the practice in Cornwall.James describes the terrible howling of the wild dogs during nights at Reedy Creek. Leeches covered his legs after James had been swimming in local pools and the children in his church schoolroom were frightened by a hoop snake in the room. Reg BUTLER in "The Quiet waters By" says that Samuel played a leading role in the isolated mining settlement of Reedy Creek, campaigning for the return of John HURT as Legislative Councillor in 1851.James MORCOM wrote that after the mines closed down at Reedy Creek the family moved to a house in Lower North Adelaide, but as the gold rush had just started in late 1851 at Forest Creek [now Castlemaine], Victoria, his father proceeded there without delay. Reg BUTLER dates his return to Adelaide and the opening of the Temperance Hotel (converted from a large house) to c. 1860. Samuel managed the Hotel until shortly before his death in 1891. Was the visit to Victoria sufficiently profitable to pay for the large hotel?
This is probably the same Samuel. From Society of Genealogists Fawcett Index: Samuel MORCOM, died 13 Apr 1891 aged 78 (b.c. 1813) - 44 years a Colonel in S.A. 1847-1891. According to his obituary in "The Observer", Samuel was an accomplished flautist

GENERAL NOTES:
"The Observer" of 14 Jan 1888, page 35, reports that while crossing Pulteney Street, at the intersection with Rundle Street, Mr S MORCOM dropped his umbrella, and while picking it up he became giddy and fell. "A four horse trolly, laden with 4 tons of flour, and driven by James Rossiter, in the employ of Willsmore and Co. of York, was passing at the time, and one of the back wheels passed over Mr MORCOM's left leg. The driver immediately stopped and the wheel rested on the limb for a short time. The driver's attention was drawn to it and he moved on". Mr MORCOM was taken to the hospital with a fracture of the thighbone. "At the time of the accident Mr Morcom, who has for some time been suffering from weak eyes, was wearing coloured spectacles. When Mr Morcom cried out his brother, Mr J Morcom, was coming along Pultneney Street, and went up and found that the injured man was his brother". [The brother was probably James.]There is a slightly different account in Samuel's Wikipedia entry: "Around noon On 7 January 1888, Morcom was crossing Rundle Street in Adelaide when he became giddy and stumbled between the wheels of an oncoming trolley, landing on his stomach. The trolley driver, a James Rossiter, was unaware of Morcom's situation and drove the trolley, with its five tonne payload, over Morcom, fracturing his left thigh. Morcom was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital, where surgeons thought it unnecessary to amputate his left leg. In hospital, Morcom progressed favourably until early on the morning of 15 January, when his condition deteriorated; he died at 3.00 pm that afternoon.A coroner's inquiry into the death found that the cause of death was inflammation of the lining membrane of the heart, owing to the absorption of blood from the bruised parts of the thigh. Morcom's brother James also testified that Morcom had been unwell recently and had been losing his eyesight."There is a coroner's record which reads "MORCOM Samuel 15 Jan 1888 (age 41) 586" Samuel was admitted to the Adelaide hospital 7th January, having been run over by a Willsmore Trolly the same day corner of Rundle and Pulteney Streets, city. Died 15th instant. No blame on driver James ROSSITER. Noted that Samuel MORCOM was a compositor of Norwood, b. Cornwall, 34 years in Australia and arrived per `Orator'."
The Wikipedia entry records Samuel's cricketing career: Morcom began playing for Norwood Cricket Club in Adelaide and soon became one of the leading cricketers in the colony, later being referred to as "the prettiest batsman of his time".Morcom played in the first ever match organised by the South Australian Cricket Association. Chosen in the "British born" team against the "Colonial born" team, the match commenced on 11 November 1872 at the St Peter's College Ground (the Adelaide Oval was not yet ready for matches).Morcom was one of three South Australians chosen in a combined colonies team (players from New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania) to play Victoria at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, starting Boxing Day 1872.[6] This was subsequently recognised as a first-class match, meaning that Morcom was one of the first South Australians to play first-class cricket, as it would be five years before South Australia played their initial first-class match. The Australasian was not impressed with the quality of the South Australians, criticising their batting and bowling, and wrote that "Morcom, if he threw in better, would make a good long-leg or cover."While he remained a leading cricketer in the colony,Morcom was the subject of an anonymous letter to the South Australian Register, the leading local newspaper of the day, criticising his "playing for coin rather than love of the game."[7] Morcom hastily responded, stating that the only time in his career he had been paid to play cricket was the 1872 intercolonial match, and that was "only my bare expenses".Although living in Adelaide, Morcom was chosen in the Yorke's Peninsula XXII that played the touring WG Grace's English team in Kadina in 1873/74. Morcom scored one and, in the second innings, zero, as Yorke's Peninsula's twenty two scored 13 between them, which at that time was the lowest score against an English side.Despite his failure for Yorke's Peninsula, Morcom was picked in the first ever South Australian cricket team, which played WG Grace's XI at Adelaide Oval, starting on 26 March 1874. Morcom scored zero and six.[9]Morcom continued to represent South Australian sides against interstate or international opponents throughout the 1870s, including matches against Victoria in 1874 and 1876, James Lillywhite's XI in 1876 and against a combined Australian side in 1877, without scoring higher than 18.Such was Morcom's popularity in Adelaide that he was featured in some of the earliest sports merchandise marketing in South Australia. One enterprising businessman created belts with a photograph of various leading cricketers and the words "South Australian celebrity". Morcom was one of seven players featured on the belts, with the Register of the belief that the belts were likely to be popular.A book about W G GRACE, relates that Sam MORCOM travelled to Melbourne to watch him play in a match and then travelled by sea to Adelaide with the the team. He helped to negotiate the terms of the Adelaide match with GRACE who was a notorious hard bargainer.
