Farmers in Pomonal had to contend with bush fires and floods. An article in the "Ararat Advertiser" in 1891 stated that Mr T.E.MORCOM had already exported apples at a profit to London". He was probably following the lead of a Dr SYME. Despite this Thomas MORCOM was forced to sell his land later in 1891. he gave the following reasons for his failure:.
Farm ManagerOccupation Note: Working for Dr SYME, one of the more successful Pomonal land owners.
Occupation Note: "I might state that in the first place I took up the land with the intention of making a grazing paddock of it in connection with gardening, but found through the land being so poor and thickly timbered with scrub, that it required much capital for me to do much with having small means and a sickly wife. I might state that Mr WETTENHALL has the means to improve the said land when he gets it".

Immigration Note: Although it is known that Thomas Henry MORCOM (00304) was in New Jersey by 1880, Thomas Edward MORCOM/B/E (15008) fits the age of 21 better. However, ages were often inaccurate in passenger lists.
Immigration Note: If it is Thomas Henry then the next passenger on the list, J Henry PEARCE 22, may possibly be a relative of his mother-in-law's second husband

I went to the Bog Mines, Shropshire and travelled from Ilfracombe to Bristol by steamer, from Bristol to Shrewsbury by stage coach. There were no railways then to Salop. I remember the journey, it was very cold and frosty. In May 1838, left the Bog Mines by carrier to Shrewsbury and coach to Wrexham, and from there to Mold and Pant Glas where Mr POWNING lived.Begun at Rhydymwyn Foundry May 1838. That was the beginning of the Foundry. Was at R.M. Foundry from May 1838 to Sept.1852. I left Rhydymwyn at this date and went to Sanfrancisco, California, arrived there in Octr. - 47 days from Liverpool, to take charge of the erection of machinery for extracting gold from quartz. Unfortunately, the vessel that started with the machinery was lost on the passage and all the machinery went down near the Falkland Island. Crew saved. I returned to England in July 1854 and was engaged by the Rhydymwyn Co. to erect a 70" cylinder pumping engine on the Foxdale mines, Isle of Man. On completion of this, I engaged to go to the Snailbeach Mines, Shropshire to erect another 60" pumping engine for the Rhydymwyn Co. On finishing this, I returned and was engaged at Rhydymwyn untill May 1863 when we left that place and began at Sandy Croft, near Chester, where I have been ever since. GENERAL NOTES:
David MORCOM (Source 147) says: "In a letter from him [01872] on 1 May 1935 (in reply to a request of mine for family history), he says "In Oakland, California, there is a street named MORCOM Avenue, the City Authorities appreciated some work your uncle Tom did and wished to show their appreciation which they did by burdening a poor innocent Avenue with his name." AGT NOTE: It now seems more likely that the street was named after Fred MORCOM, Mayor of Oakland. There is a photograph (taken c.1914-18) of Tom in the uniform of the Canadian Scots Rifles, Genevieve and daughter.
His 1916 military record describes Thomas Richard as age 44, expanded chest 35", complexion fair, eyes blue, hair grey, Church of England
