GENERAL NOTES:
Obituary in a Melbourne newspaper:ARIA STALWART DIESFor more than 50 years she was the unobtrusive but essential figure in the background, her eyes fixed on the score while future opera stars strove to make listeners love them. Now Victoria's music community is mourning the death of pianist Ellinor MORCOM, accompanist to many hundreds of aspiring singers. From 1946 to 1972, MORCOM was the accompanist for the Herald Sun Aria, then known as the Sun Aria. But her distinguished career began five years earlier when Ballarat's Royal South Street Society, which administers the Aria, asked her to be its accompanist for vocal and instrumental competitions - a position she held until 1992. MORCOM died suddenly last Wednesday, July 5 [2000] She would have been 91 next month.Former student Eleanor KERR says the day before her death MORCOM was teaching piano in her living room, as she had for decades. "She had a lifetime of sharing an extraordinary gift all her own with students" Kerr says. "She did her final recital two weeks ago with a friend of mine. I'm sure she could have a worldwide career if she had wanted to." In 1980, MORCOM was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to music. Last year she established a scholarship fund with her savings to help gifted Ballarat people study at university. "It could be to study medicine, law, anything" KERR says. "She believed in education. If people could not afford it, she thought it was a crime that talented students missed out." Ellinor MORCOM's life will be celebrated in a thanksgiving service on Friday at 2 p.m. at St Andrew's Kirk, Lydiard St, Ballarat, where she was once a choral director.Another long Obituary [cf file copy] by Sarah MARTIN [development manager of Ormond College] in the "ASE" Newspaper, Melbourne adds the following facts:She came from a musical family. "She also wanted to become a jazz pianist but her father drew the line at this" but she did play Gershwin and Porter. "Her Music Lovers committee raised the money to send a Ballarat girl Elsie MORRISON to London. "Ellinor MORCOM listed herself in the phone book as "musician". She never wanted to be known as a teacher. For all who experienced her warmth, her directness, her dedication and commitment to music and people, she was far more than either musician or teacher. She will be remembered by many in Ballarat and elsewhere as a good friend and mentor".There was also an obituary (unseen) in the Sydney Morning Herald of 4 August 2000.
In January 2001 the Ballarat Fine Arts Gallery received a $25,000 bequest from Ellinor's estate to allow the Gallery to feature more work by young artists in its collection. She had taken an active interest in the work of the Gallery and had established monthly Sunday afternoon concerts which showcased the talents of the City's young musicians.Additional Notes from Ballarat Courier 10/7/2000 (in file):She played popolar music for community singing at the Town Hall, and also played for a dancing school and for choirs at Barkly St and the Congregational Church in Dawson St. At the age of 90 she was the choral director at St Andrews Church, Ballarat. In some cases three generations of the same family were taught by her. "She was universally loved for her help, both at the keyboard, and for finding original copies of obscure music, and, importantly for helping to settle the nerves of young prformers"
